ENTERTAINMENT

Zulu-Wave-600

Zulu Wave – St. Petersburg’s own Zulu Wave have been able to ride a brand of sonically lush, ruminating avant-pop into the national spotlight. They were bright spots on the bills of the 2012 CBGB Music Festival and CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, and Michael Barrow’s voice on songs like “Puppy Tails” is a calming force that plays sonic foil to the sharp and brusque psych-prog madness on cuts like “Skataful Lies.” Their new album Jagorilla is available on iTunes. (RIYL: Muse, Television, St. Vincent)

UNRB-600

UNRB is a 7-piece band from St. Petersburg, FL. The band features an electric ukulele and a powerful 4-piece horn section that routinely switches instruments between songs. Their music touches nearly every genre including ska, rock, funk, blues, jazz, reggae, polka, even classical. Their high-energy shows, explosive sound and electrifying stage presence has quickly established UNRB as one of the premiere live acts in Tampa Bay. (RIYL: The Toasters, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish)

ronnie-dee-600

Ronnie Dee and The Super Stars – Fifth generation musician Ronnie Dee (Deeforce, Swingin’ Mooks, The Saturn 5, Gravy) has musical performance in his DNA. The son of million-selling artist Joey Dee (“The Peppermint Twist”), he now leads a family affair with The Super Stars, a band that effortlessly blends rock, soul and funk and features members of The Saturn 5, The Swingin Mooks, and The Greg Billings Band.  (RIYL: Fishbone, Bruno Mars, Jamiroquai)

rebeccazapen_600

Rebecca ZapenA third-generation musician in a family tree including players of violin, piano, double bass, guitar, and accordion, Rebecca Zapen has developed into a versatile performer: jazz crooner, classically-trained violinist, and award-winning multi-instrumentalist songwriter. Her formal violin studies began at age 3, and singing always came naturally. She graduated with honors from Florida State University, with degrees in Music and Biology, after falling in love with jazz and bossa nova. Past appearances include Jacksonville Jazz Festival, Clearwater Jazz Holiday, and Florida Folk Festival. Zapen has been a musical guest on Public Radio International show Michael Feldman’s Whad’Ya Know?, as well as being a featured soloist with the Hollywood Philharmonic Orchestra. (RIYL: Astrud Gilberto, The Cardigans)

CDBF_600

Camille Dupree & Broken Fetters – Camille Dupree & Broken Fetters craft unique and universal musical stories about redemption, love, and family. They perform a blend of indie, folk and americana that explores themes of identity and youth. Their EP, Bohemians, and LP, Demand to Glow, are available online. CD&BF regularly perform on CBS Radio’s 99.5 WQYK with Grammy-winning hosts Dave and Veronica; have twice toured the southeast US and have played such festivals as Gasparilla Music Festival, Will McLean Festival, String Break and Southwest Florida Heritage Festival. (RIYL: Brandi Carlile, Mumford and Sons, Avett Brothers)

Shankh-B-W-600

Kirtan with Shankh & Friends – Using the rich, traditional musical history of Shankh Lahiri’s cultural upbringing from India and comprised of all seasoned and professional western musicians, this unique band blends an authentic taste of Indian Kirtan with a fresh, western musical feel. ‘Shankh & Friends’ Kirtan is an unparalleled feast of integrative spiritual nourishment and delicious musicality. (RIYL: Ravi Shankar, Shakti, John McLaughlin)
